  • Local shelters are stepping up services as dangerously cold weather hits tonight and through Friday by increasing staffing and extending hours to help those in need. Connections Shelter now lets people stay until 8:30 and the Salvation Army opens its day shelter early (8:30) this weekend to avoid gaps in coverage.  KEYC

CULTURE NEWS

  • Blue Earth County Historical Society has rescheduled its local history program to a virtual tour of eastern Blue Earth County at 11 a.m. Jan. 31—registration for non-members costs $10; call 507-345-5566 for details.  Mankato Free Press

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Former MSU art professor Jim Tanner, who taught from 1968 to 2003, is honored by former colleagues and students for his innovative influence on the art department following his recent death from prostate cancer at age 84. His creative legacy continues to inspire Mankato’s local art community.  Mankato Free Press

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • MnDOT will close the Veterans Memorial Bridge for major repairs starting Feb. 3, forcing nearly 24,000 daily trips to detour via the North Star Bridge and Highway 14. Construction will continue until late 2026 with some work extending into 2027.  Mankato Free Press
