COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Greater Mankato Area United Way hosted its 2026 Volunteer Awards on Feb. 26 at the Wow!Zone, honoring over 1,800 volunteers for their dedicated community service and achievements in various award categories.  KEYC
  • Grade-school students in Mankato can join the Arbor Day Poster Contest with entries due by April 3, and the top three winners will be honored with a park tree planted on Arbor Day, April 24—inviting a creative look at a greener future.  Mankato Free Press

CULTURE NEWS

  • Mankato Playhouse will present High School Musical at Crossview Covenant Church in North Mankato over the next two weekends. Emma Lewis and Chase Breuer lead a record cast (34 performers) as local talent brings fresh energy to this classic show.  Mankato Free Press

ECONOMY NEWS

  • GreenSeam announced that Director Sam Ziegler, who has led the organization for 10 years, is stepping down on March 13 to return to his family’s fifth-generation farm + the board will start its search for a new leader to support local agribusiness.  Mankato Free Press

EDUCATION NEWS

  • MSU Mankato hosted its 75th annual Science & Engineering Fair where local students showcased innovative projects. Junior Jasmine Fleming from Lake Crystal won the grand champion award, earning an expense-free trip to Arizona for the national fair.  KEYC

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Blue Earth County reported no current impact to local services after the federal government froze $259.5 million in Medicaid reimbursements on Feb. 25, prompting many calls from recipients. County officials say coverage might be affected if the freeze lasts into March + alternative funding is not secured.  KEYC
  • The Bethany Lutheran College student Senate committee held a nonpartisan presentation on voter registration and absentee ballots for college students on Thursday with Blue Earth County Elections staff. Additional sessions will be held on March 4 at the Unitarian Universalist Fellowship (informing voters) and on April 8 at Eagle Lake City Hall.  Mankato Free Press
  • The Minnesota DNR will launch a new electronic licensing app this spring to help hunters and anglers buy licenses online and link family accounts while keeping in-person options available. Walts Bait and Tackle owner Joshua Wolters said machines are often out of service (an issue the update aims to fix).  KEYC

  • MSU women's hockey coach Shari Dickerman—gold medal winner at the Winter Olympics—discussed her win while MSU men’s coach Luke Strand prepares for a CCHA game this weekend. A new partnership between BLC Studios and Maverick Hockey has reached a milestone in the local sports scene.  KEYC
