COMMUNITY NEWS

  • YWCA Mankato will honor four Women of Distinction honorees on April 24 at the Capitol Room in St. Peter — the awardees are Barb Kaus, Diana Gabriel, Erin Simmons and Laura Stevens, with Trinitey Bryant named as the Rising Star and APX Construction honored as the business award recipient. The nonprofit will also give two grants to support efforts advancing racial justice in our community.  Mankato Free Press

CRIME NEWS

  • Brandon Robert Walters (48) was sentenced to three years of supervised probation in Blue Earth County District Court after being convicted of felony stalking for using spoof phone numbers to repeatedly contact a woman who had to change her phone, and he received credit for four days served while 15 related harassment charges were dismissed.  Mankato Free Press
  • Authorities around southern Minnesota have warned residents about an ongoing text scam that falsely claims messages are tied to unpaid road tolls—these texts use urgent language, mention E-Z pass lanes and the Minnesota Department of Transportation, and include a link. Officials said not to share any personal or financial information and to contact local law enforcement if targeted.  KEYC

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Drivers were advised to use caution on Highway 22 from St. Peter to Highway 111 as workers removed trees beginning March 24 to prep for a resurfacing project set to start mid-July and run until mid-October. The project will improve safety by adding a right turn lane at Nicollet County Road 20, upgrading lighting at intersections, and repairing culverts (bid: $3,873,434.47) (awarded to Ulland Brothers, Inc.).  KEYC
  • Mankato police will expand surveillance technology with high definition cameras, license plate readers and mobile surveillance trailers to boost public safety. Residents have 30 days (until April 24) to submit comments online before they are discussed at the April 28 council meeting.  Mankato Free Press

HEALTH NEWS

  • A nonprofit named Flamboyant Flamingo Flock Foundation from Le Center honors its late friend Mary Janovsky by fighting breast cancer through local grants—13 grants worth about $24,000 have been given since mid-December—to help patients and survivors, and the group will host a fundraiser on May 9.   KEYC
  • MSU will host its seventh Health Summit on Wednesday from 8:15 a.m.-2 p.m. at the Centennial Student Union where experts will discuss using technology to support person-centered health care. The event features keynote speakers Dr. Liz Kwo at 9 a.m. and Dr. Senan Ebrahim at 12:45 p.m. and expects 200 to 250 attendees.  Mankato Free Press
