ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • Authorities say 82-year-old Gerald Orville Fredricks (in rural Mankato) died on Monday when his tractor, which he may have started by mistake in gear, ran over him after it hit a parked UTV in his yard as rescuers could not save him.  FOX 9

CRIME NEWS

  • Mankato appeals court judges reversed drug convictions for Nathaniel Mark Thompson, 39, after finding insufficient evidence in his December 2023 trial but upheld his stolen property conviction for five bicycles taken from a storage unit—he will be resentenced for the theft charge.  Mankato Free Press

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Five international students at Minnesota State University had their visas terminated without notice by the Department of Homeland Security, according to MSU president Edward Inch in an email sent late Wednesday. The university's global education team is now assisting the students—referring them to immigration attorneys and contacting elected officials for support.  Mankato Free Press
  • After ICE detained a student at an off-campus home last Friday, MSU Mankato moved to reassure its more than 1,800 international students from 108 countries. University leaders said they are working with authorities—consulting law enforcement and support services—to protect students and keep everyone safe.  KEYC

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • North Mankato is studying plans to develop a nearly 700-acre cropland along Rockford Road and Highway 14 on the northwest edge of the city. The draft Alternative Urban Areawide Review—open for comment until May 8—shows plans for a large technology campus or a warehouse and office park that could start in 2026 or 2027 and last for several years.  Mankato Free Press
