- ➤ Mike Couch — a summer 2024 transplant from Austin — created a new online calendar to collect local events for residents. His beta version in March had over 836 views and many comments, and he asks residents to share tips and missing events. Mankato Free Press
CRIME NEWS
- ➤ Friday evening, community members & neighbors gathered at Sibley Park to hold a candlelight vigil for Dennis Vosika, whose life was tragically ended last month when he was fatally stabbed at a local Kwik Trip on what would have been his 35th birthday. KEYC
EDUCATION NEWS
- ➤ The Mankato school board will approve changes to the 2025-26 school calendar to allow summer 2026 construction and reduce class disruptions. The proposal will start school the week of August 25 and end the week before Memorial Day by shortening Thanksgiving and Winter breaks and moving some no-school days later in the year. KEYC
- ➤ Students at Minnesota State University plan to protest next week — in response to a student’s detainment and five terminations of legal residency statuses — outside Centennial Student Union. Mavericks for Change and other campus groups will join the event from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. to support international students who fear further federal action. Mankato Free Press
GOVERNMENT NEWS
- ➤ The Minnesota Department of Transportation will host a public open house on April 7 at the Kasota Community Center in Kasota—officials will explain the Highway 22 project that will improve the roadway from Mankato to St. Peter. Mathiowetz Construction Company won the $36,896,294.56 bid and construction is expected to begin in late April or early May with planned traffic detours. KEYC
- ➤ North Mankato will offer free spring cleanup for residents paying for garbage collection starting Monday and ending Thursday, while Upper North residents will have service from April 14 to 18. City crews and West Central Sanitation will pick up extra bulky items from street boulevards—appliance pickups require schedule registration. Mankato Free Press
