  • On the evening of what would’ve been his 35th birthday, about 100 community members gathered at Sibley Park holding candles to remember Dennis Vosika — who was murdered on March 18 while working at the Kwik Trip store. His long-time girlfriend and first responders shared memories and sang happy birthday to honor his life.  Mankato Free Press

ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • The Brown County Sheriff’s Office reported minor injuries after a semi collided with a train in Sleepy Eye Friday at 2:13 p.m. at 24170 U.S. Highway 14 — the driver Robert Thomas Jewett was turning into a business when the train struck the vehicle — with both train occupants treated at the scene.  Mankato Free Press

BUSINESS NEWS

  • A state auditor report showed that municipal liquor stores in south-central Minnesota earned 22% more in 2023 than in 2022 — Fairmont led with a profit of $734,166 while some cities closed stores due to debt. The report noted a 15% statewide sales increase and a 28-year trend of growth despite losses in a few cities.  Mankato Free Press

  • At the Master Gardeners of Minnesota River Valley’s annual Spring Alive event, Master Gardener intern Lucas Youngerberg, a Minnesota State University student, recalled learning about garden care from his grandmother and explained that native plants help bring back butterflies—while local expert Brenda Langerud advised waiting until mid-May for planting vegetables due to false springs and rising grocery prices.  Mankato Free Press

  • Minnesota law exempts trained storm spotters using amateur, two-way, or citizens band radios from the hands-free rule—users must operate these devices safely during weather emergencies. The guidance explains that the law does not classify their transmissions as electronic messages.  Mankato Free Press

REAL ESTATE NEWS

  • The Axis Lofts apartment building on the west side of Highway 169 near Hiniker Pond Park opened in late October and is now filling with active tenants. Leasing is picking up during prime season despite high rents ranging from $1,475 to $2,475 and plans for a second building may come after major highway improvements—set for 2027—are completed.  Mankato Free Press
