CRIME NEWS
- ➤ The attorney for Michael Lee Miller, 28, who is accused of fatally stabbing Kwik Trip clerk Dennis Vosika on March 17 in Mankato, requested a mental competency evaluation on April 2—due to Miller's history of mental illness and long-term guardianship—which may lead to civil commitment and stop legal proceedings. - ➤ Kyle Scott James, 39, received probation and a stayed 21-month prison sentence for burglarizing Pappageorge Restaurant and Bar in Mankato in 2023—he was convicted on a felony third-degree burglary charge while investigators dropped other charges after linking him to the break-in using blood evidence and a search warrant. - ➤ Robert Thomas Jewett, 24, of New Richland was ticketed by the Brown County Sheriff’s Office for a misdemeanor railroad crossing violation and for disobeying a traffic control device after he drove his semi into the path of a freight train near Sleepy Eye at 2:15 p.m. Friday—dashcam video showed the semi passed a stop sign, the collision totaled his trailer and left him and a train crew member with minor injuries while officials have yet to confirm further charges. - ➤ On Sunday evening, Blue Earth police responded at 10:22 p.m. to a call about an accidental shooting that injured 20-year-old Alexia Andreoff and 19-year-old Luis Hernandez, who were taken to United Hospital, & the Faribault County Sheriff Department recovered a firearm and vehicle while investigating charges for reckless discharge of a firearm. - ➤ Rice County Sheriff’s Office is asking the public for help locating endangered missing person Acelind Evenstad, 23, who was last seen at her home on March 30; anyone with information should call 507-334-4391. KEYC
- ➤ Austin Lei Poole, 31, of Arlington was convicted in Blue Earth County District Court for felony third-degree assault and gross misdemeanor witness tampering from an October 2022 incident in Mankato when he threw a woman over his shoulder, and he received three years of supervised probation and five days in jail—his probation prohibits any contact with the victim. Mankato Free Press

- ➤ North Mankato-based South Central College reported that an international student’s visa was revoked Tuesday — President Annette Parker emailed that the college offered support and plans to notify its other international students. This decision follows five Minnesota State University international students having had their visas revoked last week — and the college is monitoring national developments. Mankato Free Press

- ➤ Eagle Lake officials and MnDOT presented a $300,000 study that identified four design options—one using a High-T intersection—for Highway 14 improvements during Tuesday’s public meeting, and they collected resident feedback to shape final recommendations coming this summer.
