COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Ahead of this weekend's stream trout opener at St. Peter Trout Ponds, the DNR is stocking local waterways with over 5,000 rainbow trout (1,500 on Thursday) to offer a put-and-take fishery in south-central Minnesota. The season opens this weekend while other areas open later.  KEYC
  • Mental health therapist Laura Pierson at Journeys Toward Healing Counseling Center has organized a Community Art Competition for Mental Health Awareness Month. The contest is open to clients, students and community members, with wall-ready entries due by May 23, public voting from May 24-30 and winners announced May 31.  Mankato Free Press
  • Friends of the Deep Valley Libraries is hosting a spring book sale at the Blue Earth County Library garage today with books available for $1 and volunteer shifts offered in two-hour sessions. The sale continues until Saturday, helping support library programs.  Mankato Free Press

BUSINESS NEWS

  • Seoul Foods will relocate to Bridge Plaza by June to double its space to around 2,400 to 2,700 sqft for a deli and more ethnic groceries. Owner Sook Nam said the store thrived by meeting local demand — Brennan Properties helped with the move.  KEYC

CULTURE NEWS

  • Greater Mankato Growth will host Songs on the Lawn starting Thursday, June 4 at downtown City Center’s lunch hour. The free event features local bands, food vendors, and free parking (at the Civic Center and Cherry Street ramps) every Thursday in June.  KEYC
  • A historic organ will be featured at Good Counsel Chapel during the free Let the Pipes Sing event this Saturday at 4 p.m. Organized by the Southwest Minnesota Housing Partnership, the event will offer a brief concert and share the instrument's history and preservation efforts.  KEYC

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • On Wednesday, electricians from Hunt Electric began replacing modern street lights in Old Town with retro-style lamps after an installation oversight, as part of a city-approved $800,000 upgrade for the business district. The new lights aim to match the area’s classic vibe.  Mankato Free Press

SPORTS NEWS

  • The West baseball team won 6-0 against Northfield in their home opener on Thursday evening. They will face Owatonna in a doubleheader on Saturday, with game one starting at 10 a.m.  KEYC
  • The Mankato East softball team defeated Winona 13-3 on Thursday evening and will face Rochester John-Marshall in a doubleheader on Saturday starting at 12 p.m.  KEYC
  • Returning All-American Elise Jensen said she has high expectations for MSU track and field after a strong performance at the Stomper Open. She expects the team to build on this start as the outdoor season continues.  KEYC

  • Free Oral Cancer Screenings in Mankato & Rochester

    In honor of Oral, Head and Neck Cancer Awareness Month, Southeastern Minnesota Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery will offer free oral cancer screenings on April 16 from 2 pm to 4 pm at: 2519 Commerce Drive NW, Suite 110, Rochester, Minn., 55901; and 1410 Madison Avenue, Mankato, Minn., 56001. To participate, arrive at one of the clinics during the designated times and ask for a free cancer screening.
