CULTURE NEWS

  • Crews from Mankato, North Mankato and volunteers deinstalled 32 sculptures Saturday morning from the CityArt program, and new pieces—featuring a 20-foot shark from Wisconsin and pig sculptures—will be installed on May 17 for the upcoming CityArt Walking Sculpture Tour.  Mankato Free Press

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Nadia Oian Vust, a former Mankato East student now attending Perpich Arts, won a gold medal in the national Scholastic Art & Writing Awards on a March day when she checked her phone every 20 minutes for the results; her award-winning short story 'Somewhere Further Than Space' draws on her personal loss (she lost her uncle three years ago) and she will choose between Mount Holyoke and Oberlin College.  Mankato Free Press
  • Kato Public Charter School in Mankato will close on June 30 because it did not meet academic contract goals; families and students must look for new schooling options after graduation. Mankato Area Public Schools is meeting with affected families—ensuring classes continue normally while working on student transitions.  Mankato Free Press
  • Minnesota State University-Mankato does not offer Ph.D. degrees because Minnesota law assigns each institution a specific role—MSU focuses on applied doctoral degrees such as the EdD, DNP, and PsyD while research-based Ph.D.s are reserved for other state universities. MSU has long provided master’s degrees and received permission in March 2007 to add these applied doctorates.  Mankato Free Press

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The Minnesota Legislature is considering a bill to criminalize creating, possessing and sharing AI-generated child abuse images and to ban sex dolls that look like children under 12. The bill—written with help from the Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension—comes as abuse image tips in the state rose from 1,800 in 2017 to 4,370 as of April 13.  Mankato Free Press
  • On April 11, the House Transportation Committee approved an omnibus budget bill that will spend nearly $10 billion on roads, bridges, transit, and airports even though some members said it cuts money for mass transit and delays a greenhouse gas study—lawmakers plan to work on those issues as the bill moves forward. The bill also exempts fuel and material deliveries from taxes and raises the annual surcharge for electric vehicle owners.  Mankato Free Press
  • Minnesota State Patrol guidelines allow drivers to haul lumber with load extenders as long as any load extending 4 feet beyond the vehicle displays a red, yellow or orange flag at least 16 inches square—drivers must also show a red light visible from 500 feet when required. The guidelines stress that all transported items must be secured to keep roads safe.  Mankato Free Press
