COMMUNITY NEWS

  • This weekend, local groups host a variety of events such as the free Pioneer Power Swap Meet in Le Sueur from 6 a.m. to 6 p.m. and Park Day for free vehicle permits—along with book sales, concerts, open stage competitions and theater productions scheduled across venues including the Blue Earth County Library and Mankato Playhouse.  Mankato Free Press

BUSINESS NEWS

  • On Thursday’s Minnesota Business Aviation Day at the Mankato Regional Airport, nearly 200 aviation students from MSU and Rochester Community and Technical College joined 20 vendors to explore career opportunities in the local aviation business. The event showed that the MSU aviation program drives 80% of airport traffic and has a 99% job placement rate — a key boost for the region’s booming aviation industry.  Mankato Free Press

CRIME NEWS

  • Four people were charged in Nicollet County Court with 3rd degree murder and drug offenses after a man died from an overdose in St. Peter in November 2024, following an investigation by the Minnesota River Valley Drug Task Force that began last August (in Blue Earth and Nicollet Counties).  KEYC

CULTURE NEWS

  • Shannon Gibney, an award-winning Minnesota author, will open Twin Rivers Council for the Arts’ new Writers Series on Tuesday at 6 p.m. at Shared Spaces at Emy Frentz-Ward Collective (523 South Second St.) in Mankato; the event is free and open to the public.  Mankato Free Press
  • The Arts Center in St. Peter is hosting the Pageant and Singalong Nation event tomorrow at The Capitol Room, 419 S. Minnesota Ave — where community members join in without auditions to sing classic hits by Stevie Nicks and Wonder. Organizers say live local musicians will perform and the fundraiser will support the center.  Mankato Free Press

ECONOMY NEWS

  • Greenseam hosted an event on Thursday where local employers learned about recruiting international workers from area universities. Organizers said the event showed how international students can help fill job gaps in a region facing an aging workforce—providing untapped benefits to local employers.  KEYC

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • MnDOT announced a regional traffic sign replacement project will begin Monday and replace aging signs along highways in counties such as Blue Earth, Jackson, Le Sueur, Nicollet, Nobles, Rock, Sibley, and Waseca. The project will be finished by mid-August—motorists should drive carefully near work zones—.  Mankato Free Press
  • Today from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., the Mankato Department of Public Safety is hosting National Prescription Drug Take Back Day in front of the Public Safety Center on Front Street—unused or expired medications are accepted while needles, sharps, and liquids are not. The event is part of a 16-year DEA effort to reduce prescription drug misuse.  KEYC
  • The Mankato Regional Airport is undergoing continuous upgrades to support MSU’s busy aviation program—student flight operations continue to increase with the facility handling about 150 daily movements. City officials say an air traffic control tower is planned for early 2027—boosting safety as daily operations sometimes peak at 260.  KEYC
