CRIME NEWS

  • A Mankato woman was charged with felony 1st degree arson for starting a fire that destroyed her mobile home at 722 Southhaven Drive on Saturday—investigators found multiple points of origin and evidence including a matchbox, empty alcohol bottle and lighter, while witnesses reported she acted oddly before the blaze.  KEYC

CULTURE NEWS

  • A May Day festival and immersive art reception will take place Thursday, May 1 from 5—9 p.m. at Mecca Tattoo at 115 S. Broad St. and Carnegie Art Center at 120 S. Broad St., where artists will transform historic spaces with art and bursts of flowers while a Maypole, live music, children’s activities, an art sale and a food truck add to the celebration.  Mankato Free Press

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Lawmakers in Mankato are working on budget bills as delays over immigrant health care and unemployment insurance for hourly school workers hold up health and education measures. The House passed a $172 million agriculture bill—while debates continue over a bonding bill that may fund projects like Eagle Lake water work and repairs at Minnesota State University before the session ends on May 19.  Mankato Free Press

  • Mankato health providers said most patients face stress and anxiety that can make daily activities like school and work more challenging. They noted that factors such as poor sleep, high sugar and caffeine intake, and ongoing pressures add to these problems (and urged those affected to seek professional help).  Mankato Free Press

  • Mankato East defeated Mankato West (2-1) Tuesday evening. The win improved their record to 7-2 (extending a six-game win streak) while West fell to 6-1.  KEYC
