  • Local businesses on Belgrade Avenue are adapting to spring construction at the intersection of Belgrade and Range by launching a social media campaign to encourage community support - Beans Coffee House saw a 20-percent drop in traffic while Dino’s Pizzeria boosts delivery and takeout services.  KEYC

CULTURE NEWS

  • The Blue Earth County Historical Society is facing a 10% county funding cut that forced elimination of one full-time position amid federal shifts, said executive director Jessica Potter at an MPR forum (at the Mayo Clinic Health System Event Center). The group will rely on volunteers to preserve local history.  Mankato Free Press
  • KEYC & Gray Media launched the Star-Spangled Sing-Off contest on May 1, inviting Americans to submit acapella renditions of national anthem for a chance to win an all-expenses-paid trip to Nashville; entries close May 31 and the winner will be announced July 2 as part of America’s 250th birthday celebrations.  KEYC

HEALTH NEWS

  • Mental Health Awareness Month kicks off in May with local groups hosting community events to reduce stigma. A get-together at Sibley Park with food, games & local therapists is planned for May 16, and an art competition accepting submissions runs until May 23.  KEYC

REAL ESTATE NEWS

  • Mankato’s Planning Commission voted 6-1 on recommending Campus Cottages, an 84-unit housing project for young professionals near MSU, with a condition to add a stop sign at its Pohl Road exit; the City Council will decide on approval at its May 11 meeting amid local concerns over traffic and sprawl.  Mankato Free Press

  • MSU baseball played a doubleheader against UMD on Friday, winning the first game 11-0 and losing the second 11-7— the team will face UMD again in its final regular-season game today.  KEYC
