COMMUNITY NEWS

  • The North Mankato Farmers’ Market is moving to a new parking lot at 1825 W. Howard Drive — near Caswell Park and behind Fire Station #2 for its 10th season. The market will kick off on Monday, June 9th and run every Monday from 3:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. until October 13th.  KEYC

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Mankato teen Simran Kaur was named one of five finalists in the Minnesota State Science and Engineering Fair after spending 500 hours building a free app to help with autism therapy, inspired by her sister's challenges. She will compete against 1,700 students at the international science fair in Columbus, Ohio from May 10-16.  Mankato Free Press
  • Students at Franklin Elementary performed as historical figures in a wax museum event for their underclassmen — a push of a cardboard button brought history to life.  KEYC
  • Minnesota State University announced today that its academic portfolio will be realigned—this change will suspend 86 programs and certificates and merge or add new offerings so the total becomes 216. The revision will affect about 1.6% of degree-seeking students and 0.8% of certificate students while ensuring current students have a path to graduate.  Mankato Free Press
  • Elementary students at Mankato Area Public Schools will take part in Move It Wednesday during Wellness Week, where they will walk, roll, bike or scooter to school—promoting physical and mental health in a program organized with Mayo Clinic Health System. Families can join their children as the district focuses on a weeklong commitment to wellness.  Mankato Free Press

  • Mankato City Manager Susan Arntz received the Dr. Robert A. Barrett Award for Management Excellence on Thursday at the Minnesota City/County Management Association conference in Brainerd—she has served as city manager since 2020 and was praised by Mayor Najwa Massad for her commitment to local government.  Mankato Free Press

HEALTH NEWS

  • Mankato health officials said tick season is expected to be average this year with ticks common in wooded and brushy areas—residents are urged to use bug repellent and check for ticks after outdoor activities. They advised that if a tick is found, it should be removed promptly with tweezers and symptoms such as fever, rash, or headache monitored for early treatment.  Mankato Free Press
