- ➤ A Waseca County resident and nationally recognized rural leader, Benya Kraus has been chosen as Southern Minnesota Initiative Foundation’s next president and CEO and will begin her term on June 16—replacing longtime leader Tim Penny. - ➤ Brent Tesch, accused of third-degree murder in the June 2 fentanyl overdose death of Jennifer Lynn Baker, received a 57-month sentence in prison—38 in maximum security and 19 on probation—and must pay $4,408 in restitution, while her mother Karen Schultz said her life stopped when she learned of her daughter’s death. - ➤ Mankato Ribfest will take place from July 31 to August 3 at the Vetter Stone Amphitheater and will feature musical headliners including country star Chris Janson on opening night, Night Ranger on Friday, and Chris Hawkey on Sunday. - ➤ Blue Earth County Board approved an agreement on Tuesday to rebuild County Road 15 known as Main Street—county pays $2.03 million while the city will cover up to $2.04 million for the project. The plan will force detours for many St. Clair residents, and the City Council will review the expense Tuesday night—construction bids will open May 14. Mankato Free Press
- ➤ A federal judge ordered Mohammed Hoque, a 20-year-old Minnesota State University student from Bangladesh, be released from ICE custody after he was detained on March 28 for his social media support of Palestinians and because his health and studies were at risk. He will be released on a $7,500 bond while his lawsuit and immigration case continue plus the government plans to appeal. Mankato Free Press
- ➤ Crews are nearly finished demolishing County Road 9 Bridge after explosives were used in February, nearly eleven months after historic flooding damaged the Rapidan Dam. Design work for a new bridge is underway with construction planned for fall 2026, and officials face challenges with dam removal — coordinated with FEMA and other agencies — as timelines remain uncertain.
