COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Local nonprofit VINE is holding an 11 a.m. Tuesday groundbreaking in its parking lot where anonymous angel donors for the Adult Community Center project will be announced. The renovation work will proceed in phases—starting with parking lot and locker room upgrades and later moving to lobby and fitness center improvements while the center stays open until the work is complete by year-end.  Mankato Free Press
  • Abundant spring rainfall has brought a season of plant sales, swaps and farmers markets to the region, and the Le Sueur Garden Club is holding its annual plant sale today at 9 a.m. at the Le Sueur Community Center — where children can join a seed-art project and proceeds will support garden lectures, a local food shelf and a scholarship fund. Additional events include a For Pets plant sale on May 17 in North Mankato, upcoming farmers markets in Mankato and North Mankato, and a volunteer gardening day at Wheeler Park on Tuesday.  Mankato Free Press

ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • A North Mankato man was injured Friday morning at 8:26 a.m. when his car collided with a semi at the intersection of Highways 169 and 68 southwest of Mankato—he was taken to the hospital while the semi driver remained uninjured.  Mankato Free Press

  • MC’s Garage, a restaurant at 1861 Adams St., is closing today after operating for over two years due to low sales—staff said revenue was insufficient despite popular menu items like mac and cheese and chicken wings.  Mankato Free Press

CRIME NEWS

  • A Mankato woman, 44, allegedly robbed her former KFC employer by returning to ask about her paycheck and then demanding extra cash with a pistol, and police charged her Friday after about $900 went missing, arresting her 90 minutes later in North Mankato—police used a drone to recover a discarded sweatshirt and a pistol with a live round.  Mankato Free Press
  • Mankato police arrested Latosha Marie James (44) 90 minutes after a robbery at the Kentucky Fried Chicken at 1110 Madison Ave on Thursday night when the suspect entered through an unlocked door, brandished a gun and fled with money; officers reviewed security footage and used a drone to locate the firearm and recover the stolen cash when they took her into custody at 12:45 a.m. Friday.  Mankato Free Press

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Assistant director Courtney Conroy coordinated five commencement ceremonies for nearly 8,750 guests at Minnesota State University, with events held on Friday and continuing today at Bresnan Arena. The Friday sessions began with the College of Business at 3 p.m. and Humanities and Social Sciences at 6 p.m.—today the schedule calls for ceremonies for the Colleges of Science, Engineering and Technology at 9 a.m., Education at noon, and Allied Health and Nursing at 3 p.m.  Mankato Free Press

  • On Friday evening at Caswell Park, Mankato East rallied from a 3-0 deficit in the fourth inning, scoring 4 runs to win 5-3 against Byron and then defeated New Prague 12-2 to improve its record to 12-1.  KEYC
  • The Bethany Lutheran College baseball team beat Northwestern 4-3 on Friday — advancing to the UMAC title game today.  KEYC
