COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Mankato schools & select food trucks will offer free breakfast and lunch for children up to 18 from May 26 through August 21 to help ease local food insecurity. Volunteers are preparing to support the summer meal program so every child can get nourishment during school break.  KEYC

BUSINESS NEWS

  • DQ West is set to transition ownership from the Galli family to husband and wife Chris Kunst and Chantal Heetland as JoRae Galli-Storm wraps up her final shift May 21 – the new owners promise to preserve its longstanding traditions.  Mankato Free Press

CULTURE NEWS

  • Twin Rivers Council for the Arts announced that the 16th annual CityArt Walking Sculpture Tour will install 26 sculptures downtown on Saturday, May 16 (6:30 to 8:30 a.m.). CityArt in the Alley will bring a series of art events to North Mankato this summer.  MankatoLIFE
  • On Tuesday, May 19 from 6 to 7:30 p.m., Twin Rivers Council for the Arts will launch its Writers Series season featuring bestselling author Dr. Liz Fiedler Mergen at Shared Spaces at Emy Frentz on S. Second Street — she will discuss her memoir, Flowers Bloom Anyway.  MankatoLIFE
  • Sue Nelson, a Nicollet native, taught music in Mankato before starting her sports career in 1981 with the North Stars. She has been the live soundtrack of Minnesota baseball as an organist for the Twins since 1999—her work at Target Field continues to inspire fans.  KEYC

HEALTH NEWS

  • The Rapidan Heritage Society will host a mental health presentation at 7 p.m. Friday at Heritage Hall (55209 190th Street) in Mankato. Colleen Stegenga, a licensed clinical social worker, will discuss suicide prevention, depression symptoms, and QPR training for community support.  Mankato Free Press

SPORTS NEWS

  • Bethany Lutheran College’s baseball team will play Luther College Friday at 2:30 p.m. at the UW Whitewater Regional NCAA Tournament; the Vikings hold a 31 to 6 record.  KEYC
  • The Minnesota State baseball team enters the NCAA Tournament & will face Central Missouri at 5:00 p.m. Thursday in the first round at the Central Regional, with junior pitcher Mack Crowley, who is 7-0 and allowed no runs in his last 16 innings, leading the squad.  KEYC
