ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Volunteers with the city and nonprofit Great River Greening planted about 50 trees at Hiniker Pond to help cool the urban heat island effect, and the project — which selected 17 noninvasive species — received guidance from the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources.  Mankato Free Press

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The zipper merge is a driving strategy that urges motorists to remain in their lanes until reaching the merge point when signs show a lane will close, which reduces backups and crash risks. Minnesota State Patrol promotes this method — it helps lower road rage and congestion during heavy traffic.  Mankato Free Press
  • Blue Earth County officials plan to study a new tornado siren system this fall that uses a high-tech polygon to sound alerts only in areas under a tornado warning—evaluating 49 sirens owned by the county and local towns. The study may lead to a multi-year project with potential upgrades costing up to $60,000 each as officials weigh the challenges of old and varied equipment.  Mankato Free Press

REAL ESTATE NEWS

  • Mankato City Council approved the fourth phase of the Partnership Community Land Trust which will add 12 new construction homes to bring the total to 23 affordable properties, with buyers able to purchase a home by summer 2026. The project now uses only 15 percent city funding and relies on state, federal, county and local funds to support affordable home ownership.  Mankato Free Press
