- ➤ VINE Faith in Action will host community open houses to discuss an age-friendly initiative proposal; one meeting is today from 3-6 p.m. at North Mankato Police Annex (1001 Belgrade Ave) while the other will be held tomorrow from 3-6 p.m. at Blue Earth County Library (100 E. ACCIDENTS NEWS
- ➤ No one was injured when a fire broke out early Monday at Niesen’s Riverside Sports Bar near the east edge of St. Peter—Le Sueur County deputies, St. Peter police, and local fire departments responded quickly and are investigating the incident. Mankato Free Press
- ➤ Local law enforcement and state officials met Monday in Mankato to discuss Minnesota's 112 road fatalities so far this year—officials plan to focus on enforcing distracted, impaired driving and speeding to lower fatalities to a target of 225. KEYC
- ➤ A 68-year-old man from Amboy died when he was pinned by a large agricultural tire on a Blue Earth County farm on Sunday afternoon+ firefighters and deputies pronounced him dead at the scene while the sheriff’s office began an investigation. Mankato Free Press
ENVIRONMENT NEWS
- ➤ At an open house Monday evening, city leaders and residents reviewed the nearly finished Climate Action Plan that lists ways to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by updating transit, building energy efficiency, and stormwater management — proposals include measures like urban farming, recycling expansion, and more tree planting. Online public comments will be accepted through May 29 and City Council members will meet next Tuesday before the plan is expected to be adopted in June. Mankato Free Press

- ➤ The family of Starsha Silva, 36, who died at North Memorial Hospital on May 24 after weeks of chest pain while in Waseca federal prison, has filed a lawsuit alleging that prison staff delayed her emergency heart surgery recommended by Mayo Clinic doctors—her death was ruled from severe heart disease. Mankato Free Press
- ➤ Local lawmakers in Mankato rushed to pass budget bills before the midnight deadline but faced delays when a human services policy bill stalled by last-minute GOP moves (which impacted other key measures). DFL Rep. Luke Frederick said a bonding meeting is scheduled for Tuesday and a one-day special session (focused on state-owned assets and pending bills) may be held later this week. Mankato Free Press
- ➤ In three months, visitors to Mankato’s biggest downtown parking ramps will no longer face a gate when exiting as the city switches to a pay-by-plate system that asks drivers to pay at kiosks. Construction will begin mid-July, work will finish by Aug. 15, and enforcement will start on Oct. 1 + the $332,000 project includes an education campaign and may delay other planned ramp upgrades.
