- ➤ The Mankato chapter of the National Association of Letter Carriers has begun its annual fundraiser for ECHO Food Shelf and is now accepting only money donations—residents can give until the end of May to help fund a new walk-in freezer. - ➤ Two residents from the St. Peter treatment center for sexually dangerous people escaped from the unlocked CPS facility, with 53-year-old Steven Loren Edwards tricking staff by placing a dummy with his GPS monitor on May 16—he fled through Albert Lea and was later apprehended in Missouri—while 45-year-old Beau-Jacob Edward Zimmer cut his ankle monitor with a kitchen knife and was arrested on May 9. - ➤ The Southern Minnesota Initiative Foundation awarded 34,639 children’s books to 73 organizations through its Early Literacy Grant Program, boosting the annual distribution by 15,000 books to support early literacy for kids birth to age 8 in partnership with local publishers Capstone+ABDO.
