CRIME NEWS
- ➤ A Mapleton man, Troy Blaine Almhjeld, has been charged with second degree murder in the death of his 71-year-old father, Blaine Lars Almhjeld, after his vehicle left the road on Highway 22 just after 2:00 a.m. Tuesday and police later found his father with severe injuries including stab wounds — he then surrendered to officers near his Mapleton apartment. GOVERNMENT NEWS
- ➤ U.S. Sens. Amy Klobuchar and Tina Smith announced a $5 million federal grant to help southern Minnesota repair roads and bridges damaged by summer 2024 floods and the failure of the historic Rapidan Dam in Blue Earth County—County Road 9’s bridge is among the structures set for replacement. Local and state officials will use the grant to improve travel safety and support long-term recovery efforts. Mankato Free Press
- ➤ The Minnesota Department of Public Safety warned residents today not to pay any texts claiming to be from the DMV that request immediate payment for unpaid tickets—these fake messages may lead to suspended driving privileges or lost registrations. Some residents reported getting multiple messages and are advised not to click links and to call DVS at 651 296 2940 if they have concerns. Mankato Free Press
- ➤ A new law from the Minnesota DNR requires boaters to pass an online safety course before operating a boat starting July 1—first for those born after June 30 and later expanding to others in the coming years, officials said. KEYC

- ➤ Lewis Lofts at 209 Dewey Lane in Mankato is now complete and offers 64 affordable units for seniors with rents as low as $475 a month. The four-story building features one and two bedroom apartments with energy efficient appliances and amenities such as a fitness center and parcel lockers — the $17.5 million project welcomed its first residents in April.
