  • The Mankato Salvation Army is offering a cooling center at its day shelter (700) from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. today and Sunday to help residents battle dangerously high heat that will continue until 9 p.m. Sunday.  Mankato Free Press
  • Today, Mankato residents can visit the Farmers’ Market from 8 a.m. to noon at the Best Buy Parking Lot and join the styrofoam collection at Kato Moving and Storage from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.—other weekend events include Railroad Days, historical house tours, parades, musical performances, and brewery celebrations happening through Sunday.  Mankato Free Press
  • The annual fundraiser 2 Wheels 2 Heal will return with a new focus to honor Sgt. Cade Wolfe, and its banner is on display at the Eagle Lake American Legion. The event will support veterans and change its tribute approach this year.  KEYC

ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • A 16-year-old Vernon Center teen died from injuries after a two-vehicle crash on Highway 169 when her 2003 Honda Accord collided at 6:07 p.m. on Thursday with a northbound 2014 Ram pickup near the Highway 169 and 150th Street intersection in Blue Earth County—officials said both drivers wore seatbelts and alcohol was not a factor.  Mankato Free Press

CRIME NEWS

  • A Rochester man, Michael Paul Schugel, 40, was charged with felony domestic assault in Blue Earth County after police said he choked his victim and later sent a text saying she would regret it—his next court appearance is set for 1:30 p.m. Thursday.  Mankato Free Press

CULTURE NEWS

  • New Ulm Diocese will start a spiritual journey on Sunday at 10 a.m. from the New Ulm cathedral as eight walkers set out on an eight-day pilgrimage covering 90 miles with stops in several local towns, and the journey will end with a welcome home celebration at St. Mary’s at 3 p.m. on June 29 — the rededication of Our Lady of the Prairie is part of this event.  Mankato Free Press

HEALTH NEWS

  • Blue Earth County Mental Health Center in Mankato has seen monthly appointments rise from 617 in 2024 to 650 in 2025 as more people seek help for mental health issues. Center leaders say the increase is due to many factors — including better recognition of mental illness and lasting effects of pandemic isolation — and they plan to adjust services to meet rising demand.  Mankato Free Press
