Good morning, Mankato.

Mankato is seeing a burst of local business activity—an ice cream parlor now offers summer hours and positive reviews, McDonald’s PlayPlace held festivities today with photo opportunities and meal deals, and a day care designed for children with autism is offering tours ahead of its July 1 opening. Additional projects include a new karate school and spin studio on Riverfront Drive, a skin clinic med spa and apartment complex in North Mankato, and plans for a Popeyes restaurant that remain in the planning stage after permit extensions and delays.

Logan McCollum, a sophomore at Mankato West, tried high jump after his gym teacher saw his talent and he quickly raised his jump from 5-foot 8 to 6-foot 2 in just a few weeks of practice.

He placed 20th at the state championship and his coaches expect him to break the six-nine record — his progress has also boosted his basketball vertical.
