- ➤ About 40 people gathered in front of the Mankato Intergovernmental Center on Monday to protest the One Big Beautiful Bill Act that would cut Medicaid, SNAP and other services while giving tax breaks to the wealthy—local faith leaders from churches, Open Door Health Center and community groups urged local officials to speak against the proposed cuts at the upcoming city meeting. - ➤ A 46-year-old Wells man died after his 2008 Kawasaki ZX1400CC sport motorcycle left the road on Saturday evening in rural Wells when he failed to turn for an eastbound curve—he was not wearing a helmet and was thrown from the bike, according to the sheriff. Mankato Free Press

- ➤ May data from Minnesota’s Department of Employment and Economic Development showed the Mankato area’s nonfarm jobs rose 0.7% to 58,683 while the state added 6,600 payroll jobs, nearly doubling the national rate. - ➤ At Monday’s city council meeting, officials approved new AI surveillance systems for police while residents voiced concerns over privacy—officials clarified that measures linking to a national database and mobile surveillance trailers were not approved and that the effectiveness of the new equipment will be reviewed in six months. - ➤ Steven Rykhus, a longtime DNR volunteer from New Ulm, was honored for a second time by being named the 2024 ATV safety instructor of the year, following his 2014 award as volunteer firearms safety instructor of the year. He has taught nearly 70 classes over 20 years and certified about 1,200 students + continues to recruit new instructors to promote outdoor safety. Mankato Free Press
