COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Songs on the Lawn organizers added two July concerts to the free summer music series downtown; the Joyann Parker Band will perform from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. on July 10 at Civic Center Plaza—local folk rock musician Stacy K will play on July 17 as The Federales' June concert was canceled due to bad weather and will not be rescheduled.  Mankato Free Press
  • Area communities are set to celebrate Fourth of July with Cambria marking its 154th tradition by hosting a 10 p.m. fireworks display Thursday followed by games, a potluck and a parade Friday, while St. Peter will present a parade with Miss Minnesota at 10 a.m. and a community picnic. Mankato will hold its annual fireworks show at 10 p.m. Friday from MSU athletic fields—free parking and FM broadcasts provided—and New Ulm will host a free Party in the Park with live music.  Mankato Free Press

ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • A SUV crashed into Eagle Lake’s public works building at 90 LeRay Ave on Thursday afternoon when 28-year-old Nicole Marie Neubert panicked and stepped on the accelerator—no one was injured and investigators confirmed she was not impaired.  Mankato Free Press
  • At approximately 7:23 p.m. on Thursday the 2023 Volkswagen Jetta driven by 72-year-old Alice Lenora Laukkonen—of rural Mankato crashed into the west side of Hillcrest Rehabilitation Center at 714 South Bend Avenue, injuring a resident and Laukkonen who were taken to Mayo Clinic Health System while deputies investigated a suspected DWI.  Mankato Free Press

  • Project developer Joe Holtmeier said a commercial recreation complex will soon begin to appear on 90 acres of quarry land on Mankato’s north side— the plan includes a campground, wakeboarding and aquatics parks, deep-water climbing walls and a related project to add 16 miles of public mountain bike trails.  Mankato Free Press

CRIME NEWS

  • Alex Davis Olson, 26 of Mankato, was convicted of felony theft for a Waseca burglary in which about $12,000 in goods including a firearm, crossbow and generators were taken. He was sentenced Thursday to 15 months at the Minnesota Correctional Facility in St. Cloud — he will serve 16 days in Waseca County Jail with credit for time served and remain under supervised probation until June 2028.  Mankato Free Press

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • MnDOT will begin pavement and shoulder improvements on Watonwan County Road 3 near Madelia on June 30 and July 1 to ease traffic on the Highway 169 detour around Lake Crystal — drivers should expect brief delays and follow flagger instructions.  KEYC

HEALTH NEWS

  • A new AED with a Stop the Bleed kit was installed at Caswell Park in North Mankato to provide quick help for park visitors following advocacy from Faith Larson’s family and heart health supporter Emily Schumacher. The device was donated by Marley and Judi Lloyd — ensuring rapid first aid is available to athletes, kids, and families.  KEYC
