- ➤ Mankato City Council set a public hearing on July 28 for planning and zoning approvals on a proposed 40-unit housing project—Poplar Apartments—that will offer supportive housing for people at risk of homelessness and is planned to open in 2026. City staff and the Planning Commission have recommended approval, and there has been little local opposition so far. Mankato Free Press
- ➤ United Prairie Bank in Mankato is awarding $240,000 to MSU Mankato, $128,000 to Greater Mankato United Way and $16,000 to Feeding our Communities Partners through a grant from Federal Home Loan Bank. The funding comes from its Member Impact Fund—which multiplies community donations three times—and will support local nonprofits focused on economic development and affordable housing. KEYC

- ➤ A 20-year-old North Mankato woman was injured when her car rolled near Howard Drive at 1:46 a.m. Sunday after her vehicle hit a boulder and crashed into a tree—emergency crews extricated her and she was treated for minor injuries at Mayo Clinic Health Systems while police said alcohol and speed were factors. Mankato Free Press

- ➤ Mankato Public Schools superintendent Paul Peterson said that federal funding cuts and freezes are hurting programs like Adult Basic Education and could reduce services for students. Other district leaders (including St. Peter superintendent Jon Graff) noted that uncertainties over Title funds and SNAP benefits may force future staffing and enrollment challenges.
