Good morning, Mankato.
🏘️ Community
Mankato will host history’s largest peace torch relay Friday morning as runners from eight countries embark on a 76-mile leg to Minneapolis on Highway 169.
The event is part of a five-month journey across all 50 states honoring America’s 250th anniversary.
🎭 Culture
Twin Rivers Council for the Arts invites residents to Learn Art on Saturday, July 18, from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. in the alley behind NaKato Bar & Grill—where interactive letterpress printing, live watercolor demos, leather stamping and a collaborative mural let all ages try new creative techniques.
🎓 Education
Cornerstone School will open a new campus for 6th to 8th graders this fall at the former Kato Public Charter School location on 6th Street in Mankato.
The school is a partnership between Mount Olive + Peace Lutheran + Eagle Lake Lutheran that may add 30 seats to support growing enrollment.
🌲 Environment
Starting this summer, Aspyn Acres in Waseca has opened a fawn rehabilitation center to care for orphaned baby deer in a clinical facility and natural enclosure — the program plans to ease in care for up to 20 fawns and release them to the wild early fall.
🏥 Health
Mankato Chemical Health received a permit to operate its outpatient alcohol and drug counseling center in a former church at 114 Pohl Road despite local opposition.
The city council approved minor adjustments (such as no outdoor therapy sessions in the evening) to address neighborhood concerns.
🏈 Sports
Local softball players and seven local businesses raised $30,000 to install new scoreboards at Jefferson Park in Saint Peter — replacing the 20-year-old boards used for girls fastpitch and other baseball events.
The upgrade will benefit the park as part of the ongoing effort to improve its facilities.
