  • Schwickert’s revived its home upgrade award for community volunteers and selected longtime YMCA mentor Jim Weart as the first recipient—he also donated $1,000 to the mentorship program he supports.  KEYC
  • Today at ISG Field, 601 Reed St., the 10th annual LEEP Legends softball event will feature a rematch competition starting at 6:35 p.m. with an alumni team facing 28 well-known rookie players while gates open at 5 p.m., and the family-friendly event will include a Home Run Derby, a mascot race, and an after-party with local musician Garrett Steinberg along with tickets priced at $25 for adults and $15 for ages 4-14.  Mankato Free Press

  • Fargo-based Bell Bank will host its 11th AgViews Live seminar on Tuesday morning at the Courtyard by Marriott (901 Raintree Road) to discuss tariffs and farm programs. The free event requires registration and will feature ag finance author David Kohl and agribusiness director Lynn Paulson as well as a complimentary breakfast at 8 a.m. and lunch at 11:30 a.m.  Mankato Free Press

EDUCATION NEWS

  • University of Minnesota Extension staff received layoff letters last week after Congress eliminated federal SNAP-Ed funding, and educators fear local communities will lose key nutrition and health programs. Affected staff in southern Minnesota will have their positions end by August 22—raising concerns over the sudden loss of support.  Mankato Free Press

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • The Minnesota Center for Environmental Advocacy released a report on Wednesday detailing how agricultural drainage is increasing sediment in the Minnesota River and harming water quality while keeping farms productive—experts say policy changes like stricter permits and river-friendly water storage could reduce runoff by 40%.  Mankato Free Press

  • Judge Allison L. Krehbiel's retirement will create a vacancy in Minnesota's 5th Judicial District in St. Peter; the Commission on Judicial Selection has opened the application process for the seat. Application materials are due by 4 p.m. on August 6 and the commission will hold interviews in late August.  Mankato Free Press
  • Abdo, the firm that audits Mankato’s finances, examined spending on construction after mistakes on Riverfront Drive caused costs to rise nearly 18% above estimates — a $940,000 purchase of traffic signals and lights was made without proper approval. The clean audit noted strong overall financial management while an independent review of controls is set to start to help prevent similar errors in the future — ensuring better oversight going forward.  Mankato Free Press
