  • At BENCHS shelter in Mankato, local artist Dinah Langsjoen painted a new mural in the Apollo room that offers healing messages and a tribute to her late dog Dodo amid a major leadership change. The shelter will host an open house from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. Thursday to unveil its rebrand + highlight the mural's fresh impact on the space.  Mankato Free Press

BUSINESS NEWS

  • The City Center Partnership has changed its name to Downtown Partnership of Mankato/North Mankato to show its new focus on downtown growth and local support — its new branding, mission, vision and programs will roll out later this month.  KEYC

CRIME NEWS

  • A Mankato man pleaded guilty to money laundering for his role in the Feeding Our Future fraud scheme where he and his brother falsely claimed to have provided 1.6 million meals using taxpayer dollars (sentencing will be scheduled later).  KEYC

ECONOMY NEWS

  • At Bell Bank’s 11th AgView live conference in Mankato, experts explained that farmers must adjust to global challenges such as tariffs and rising trade competition—affecting crop and livestock markets. They added that changes in land ownership, climate events, and new tools like drones and artificial intelligence will shape farming in the coming years.  Mankato Free Press

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Blue Earth County Board voted Tuesday to dissolve the joint powers agreement for Immtrack after state funding cuts ended support for the local immunization hub—public health services will now rely on the state program. The board also approved two change orders for the All Seasons Arena project that will add about $9,000 to costs from the contingency fund as construction nears completion in the next few months.  Mankato Free Press
  • North Mankato has a pending application from Madeline Peck of Cornflower Blue Properties for a cannabis store at 300 Belgrade Avenue that received preliminary approval in June but was postponed on Monday due to incomplete council attendance—the decision will be made on August 4 or automatically approved after 60 days.  KEYC
  • Mankato officials reported that the cost to convert the historic Kern Bridge into a bike and pedestrian crossing has risen to $9.4 million—nearly four times the original estimate as construction of new bridge piers begins this fall and reassembly is scheduled for April and May. Federal and state funds totaling almost $6 million have been secured, and local sales tax plus state aid will cover the remaining cost.  Mankato Free Press
  • The Blue Earth County Board is working to lower the proposed 8.5% tax levy increase for 2026—focusing on factors such as a nearly 9% drop in agricultural values and moderate rises in residential and apartment values that will hurt residential taxpayers; funding cuts may require later reductions in staff hours or numbers, and a final levy will be submitted in December after preliminary figures are due at the end of September.  Mankato Free Press
