ACCIDENTS NEWS
- ➤ A 52-year-old North Mankato man died when an eastbound motorcycle and a southbound car collided at the intersection of Highway 14 and Brown County Road 4 near Springfield at 3:45 p.m. Saturday—state patrol said a 63-year-old driver escaped injury and more details are expected on Sunday. - ➤ Tania Cordes, who has run the historic Kato Ballroom in Mankato for over a decade, is seeking new partners or buyers to keep the venue running as a music spot—she will honor all current bookings through next year. Mankato Free Press
ENVIRONMENT NEWS
- ➤ Today, Mankato crews are removing about 250 ash trees to combat the emerald ash borer—this multi-year effort aims to reduce safety risks and will continue for three to four more years while the city plants diverse new tree species to rebuild the urban canopy. Mankato Free Press
GOVERNMENT NEWS
- ➤ State transportation officials warn that starting in February the Veterans Memorial Bridge will be closed for a $23 million reconstruction that will force drivers, bikers and pedestrians to use detours via the Highway 14 and North Star Bridges — adding nearly a mile to travel routes. The project will repair the aging structure with modern upgrades such as new signal lights and ADA-compliant sidewalks — intermittent closures on streets, trails and parking areas are expected until final work in spring. - ➤ Mankato’s historic post office on Second Street is planned to be redeveloped into an event center and wedding venue, with a high-end restaurant, bar, rooftop bar and hotel as part of a project that preserves its charm. Neighborhood meetings were held this spring as Big Blue Hospitality works to change land use rules—officials say permits and financing may not be ready until fall with construction expected to begin in 2026.
