  • Mankato’s REACH changed its name to LSS Youth Resource Center — Mankato to help young people find needed services. The center serves youth aged 16 to 24 facing homelessness and recorded 3,144 visits last year.  Mankato Free Press
  • After nearly 6 inches of rain on July 23, flooding left 66 tenants at Homestead Apartments displaced as government and nonprofit agencies—led by the Southwest Minnesota Housing Partnership—moved most residents to temporary hotels while arranging new housing. Tenants face lease terminations on Monday, Aug. 4 and can store salvaged belongings rent free for one month amid continued cleanup and support from local groups.  Mankato Free Press
  • Ribfest booths at Riverfront Park have been busy since 11:00 a.m. as teams from BBQ King Smokehouse and Texas Lightning BBQ cook ribs ahead of live music and crowds arriving for the weekend event. Each booth follows its own schedule - some finishing early while others time their cooking to match the event's pace - to keep the festival running smoothly.  KEYC

CRIME NEWS

  • Truman — The Martin County Sheriff’s Office asked for help from local residents after a pickup truck was stolen around 4:45 a.m. from East Second Street and used in an attempt to take an ATM from Profinium Financial, with video showing at least three masked people fleeing east on 240th Street while officers looked for a light-colored minivan and a four-door white pickup.  Mankato Free Press

  • Local farmers report that this season’s crops look excellent even though heavy rain has slowed spraying and some fields show signs of weed and disease issues. Experts said improved yields may help soften low commodity prices as traders brace for a bumper crop across the region — a sign that good harvests could boost supplies.  Mankato Free Press

  • State officials say Minnesota's air quality alert is extended through Monday because wildfire smoke has pushed conditions into the red zone, making the air unhealthy for everyone — the Minnesota Pollution Control Agency expects most smoke to shift north by later Monday.  Mankato Free Press
