  • Today, locals can visit the Mankato Farmers’ Market at the Best Buy Parking Lot from 8 a.m. to noon while nearby towns host history tours, museum hours and music shows; Sunday brings community events including the annual Lady Slipper Doll Club Show and a Pie in the Park fundraiser—providing a busy weekend for the region.  Mankato Free Press

CRIME NEWS

  • An 18-year-old male was arrested for an assault amid disturbances at College Town apartments on Aug. 15 and Aug. 16 + police increased patrols while the investigation continues.  Mankato Free Press

EDUCATION NEWS

  • MSU Mankato received a donation of 160 acres of farmland from alum Sherry L. Arndt near Comfrey—valued over $1.6 million—destined to support student research and scholarships; 60 acres will become a new research farm for applied agriculture while 100 acres will help fund nursing scholarships.  KEYC
  • The board reviewed summer programs, noting a 13.5% rise at Camp Ignite and a 14.5% drop in summer school enrollment, while GED testing saw two more passes than last year. Superintendent Paul Peterson said delayed federal funds may force cuts next summer—promising plans to adjust offerings as needed.  Mankato Free Press

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Mankato’s County Road 82, known as Victory Drive, is now open from Marwood Drive to Extension Street after being closed since early May for storm sewer improvements, concrete curb and gutter work, pavement, trail replacement, traffic signal upgrades at Main Street, and lighting enhancements—completion that came just in time for the new school year.  KEYC
  • On Aug. 13, the DOJ sent a letter to the Minnesota Secretary of State asking for the state’s voter registration list by Aug. 21—warning that failure to comply could result in legal action; Secretary of State Steve Simon rejected the request, saying his office must protect voter privacy. Simon noted that the request was unprecedented in scope and timing.  Mankato Free Press
