ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • Neighbors rallied to support a family after a fatal house fire on Monday that left two children dead and a woman hospitalized—rescue efforts were hampered by dangerous conditions as local groups and businesses organized donation drives.  KEYC

CRIME NEWS

  • A Wisconsin man was arrested Sunday in Mankato after an undercover operation by the Mankato Department of Public Safety that used an officer posing as a 14-year-old girl in online chats—he is charged with soliciting a child through electronic communication.  Mankato Free Press

CULTURE NEWS

  • The local film Song and Dance will stay on the big screen at Spotlight Theatre in Mankato for an extra week—directed by Kris Keltgen, the film tells the story of his daughter Evelyn who was born with a lung illness but became a skilled saxophone player while honoring Midwest polka and dance bands.  Mankato Free Press

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Blue Earth County is set to update its mining ordinance that has not changed since 1977—county officials say the new rules will include clearer site guidelines, set distances from homes and parks, and stronger environmental protections. The county will hold stakeholder meetings and public education sessions as it works to balance industrial needs with community impacts, with the draft ordinance expected by the end of the year.  Mankato Free Press
  • Mankato City Manager Susan Arntz and Administrative Services Director Parker Skophammer presented the 2026 budget Monday night, showing a proposed 4.7% property tax increase while council members urged a 5.2% rise to boost reserves—details that will be outlined at a September 8 work session.  Mankato Free Press

  • The Mankato West boys soccer team hosted Red Wing on Tuesday and won 8-0.  KEYC
  • Tuesday, the Mankato East boys soccer team hosted Northfield and lost 1 to 0 when Northfield scored a late goal — the only score of the game.  KEYC
  • Loyola girls’ volleyball controlled the match from start to finish on Aug. 26, winning 25-16, 25-19, and 25-18 against Sleepy Eye; Olivia Templin, Amelia Speckel, Aryah Zuehlke and Jace Schauman led the victory, and Loyola will face LeSueur-Henderson Thursday while Sleepy Eye plays Saint Mary’s next Tuesday.  KEYC
