COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Tom Lentz, a Mankato banker and market president at West Bank, marks 40 years in banking after switching from a dentistry goal when a neighbor connected him with a local bank — he rose from a teller role to become a community leader who volunteers with groups like the Mankato Symphony Orchestra.  Mankato Free Press

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Mankato Area Public Schools' policy committee recommended adjustments to 21 school policies on gun violence, emergency procedures and off-campus speech, noting the changes were planned months ago. The board will vote on implementing the revisions in October—this review will update reporting and training requirements.  Mankato Free Press
  • The Mankato Area Public Schools board received its annual back to school report Tuesday and noted enrollment rose from 7,650 to about 7,818 as board member Elizabeth Hanke questioned differences across grade levels. Superintendent Paul Peterson and school officials explained that funding issues for adult basic education were resolved after a shortfall—teachers were rehired and programs reinstated for the new school year.  Mankato Free Press
  • Washington Elementary in Mankato and North Elementary in St. Peter were named Minnesota School of Excellence for the school year 2025 to 2026 by the Minnesota Elementary School Principals’ Association—highlighting their strong student support and community partnerships. Only 13 schools received this prestigious honor.  Mankato Free Press

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • North Mankato City Council approved a plan to remove up to 20 deer in partnership with USDA-APHIS during fall and winter this year, following a plan set in 2024 to reduce deer-vehicle collisions and property damage. Officials noted seven collisions and 16 citizen complaints led them to seek a DNR permit — a move aimed at enhancing safety and balance in our community.  Mankato Free Press
