  • The annual Rock n Roll Up Your Sleeve blood drive is held this week at The Pond on Madison — and one local family is making blood donation a tradition after their son’s recovery from leukemia. Helleksen, who donated for the first time, said the six-minute process helps save lives and supports others needing transfusions.  KEYC
  • Lynne Gehrke has cared for a flock of guinea fowl that appeared on North Broad Street about 12 years ago—she feeds them and keeps them safe through cold winters in her garage. Residents enjoy watching the birds, though some worry when the noisy flock crosses busy streets.  Mankato Free Press
  • United Way’s Human Foosball event returns to Mankato this Saturday — Front Street will be blocked from noon to 5 p.m. — as teams fundraise for local support programs while volunteers and players join the games.  KEYC

CULTURE NEWS

  • Minnesota State University, Mankato’s Department of Performing Arts announced that individual and season tickets are on sale for the 2025-2026 Theatre and Dance season. The season will feature musicals like Oklahoma! in October and Willy Wonka in April along with plays such as The Birds and Stephen King's Misery, and The Roommate will run September 24-27—season tickets cost $100 and are available online until October 12.  MankatoLIFE
  • The city of North Mankato is setting up Benson Park for the fifth annual Symphony on the Prairie concert in partnership with the Mankato Symphony Orchestra. The event (scheduled for Saturday from 6 p.m. to 7:30 p.m.) will be the first concert in the orchestra’s 75th Anniversary season and will feature hits from ABBA and Pirates of the Caribbean.  KEYC

EDUCATION NEWS

  • MANKATO — Minnesota State University opened the Maverick Innovation Gateway yesterday, giving students and local businesses a new hub for hands-on entrepreneurial learning. The center, housed in the former bookstore near campus and partly funded by a $2 million donation from Nidec Corporation, offers spaces for collaboration and innovation.  Mankato Free Press

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Mankato has begun construction on a new quarter-mile extension of Bassett Drive costing $1.1 million to serve a new regional lab and nearly 80 acres of undeveloped land—Dirt Merchant Inc. won the bid and work is expected to be substantially complete by the end of the year.  Mankato Free Press

SPORTS NEWS

  • Gustavus women's soccer team shut out Bethany Lutheran 3-0 on Tuesday — senior Haillee Wilson scored in the first half to keep the team undefeated against the Vikings. The Vikings will travel to Augsburg on Saturday — Gustavus will host UW-Oshkosh next.  KEYC
  • Cade Stingle, a sophomore who showed promise last season, is set to take a larger role on MSU football's defense this fall — he will work to boost his impact in 2025.  KEYC
