- ➤ Mankato’s community ice arena finished a 16 month and fourteen million dollar renovation that upgraded the lobbies, restrooms and two ice rinks while adding new seating for spectators. The city will host a free public open skate from 1:00 to 2:30 p.m. today—officials say the improvements will reduce future maintenance issues. Mankato Free Press

- ➤ Local apple lovers can choose from many varieties at Alternative Roots Farm and Lee’s Irish Mountain Orchard as the harvest runs from July to October—customers like Shawna Petersen-Brown enjoy apples fresh for baking and snacking. - ➤ MSU Homecoming offers a week of free public events from Monday through Sept. 27 with a kickoff on the Centennial Student Union mall, a public capital campaign launch, theatre performances, and athletic games. - ➤ North Mankato City Council is holding a public hearing on Dec. 1 to set up a TIF district for turning the old Taco John’s site on Lor Ray Drive into a new project. Benesch Properties has proposed a building of 8138 square feet for Advanced Psychological Services— the developer seeks 485K dollars in tax increment financing out of a 2.6 million dollar plan and the proposal will be reviewed before final approval. - ➤ The Defense POW/MIA Accounting Agency announced the remains of New Ulm U.S. Army Capt. Willibald C. Bianchi—killed on Jan. 9, 1943 during World War II—were identified on Aug. 11. Mankato Free Press
