COMMUNITY NEWS

  • A new event called Kato Bike Fall Fest will debut this weekend at Mount Kato with trail walking and mountain biking on Saturday and route riding on Sunday—registration opens at 8 a.m. Organizers said the event, a successor to the Minnesota River Ramble which ended in 2023, will bring the local biking community together.  KEYC
  • The Salvation Army has launched its Coats for Kids campaign — a drive to collect new and gently used winter gear for local children who need help staying warm. Donations will be accepted at the Family Thrift Store at 201 Star St. and in local stores as many families struggle with rising living costs.  Mankato Free Press

CULTURE NEWS

  • Merely Players will host an event featuring Broadway actress Ann Harada at Lincoln Community Center on Oct. 24—she will share behind-the-scenes stories from shows like Avenue Q to help boost local theater attendance. The fundraiser, headed by new artistic director Jonathan 'JB' Brandt, aims to strengthen community ties and attract college theater programs.  Mankato Free Press

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Mankato Area Public Schools and the DNR teamed up to take over 500 10th-grade biology students to Minneopa State Park for a hands-on lesson—teachers say the trip gives real-world experience that may spark future careers.  KEYC
  • Mankato West has inducted four alumni and an educator into its Hall of Fame, honoring their achievements in arts—education, journalism, athletics, and community service. The inductees will be celebrated at a banquet today at Sky One Eleven at 5:30 p.m.  Mankato Free Press
  • MSU launched its Future State campaign to build a $60 million sports and events stadium that is already 50 percent funded with support from Glen Taylor, Becky Taylor and Taylor Corp — the 6,500-seat venue will host Maverick football and soccer. Construction on the first phase is expected to begin in fall 2027, and the project will transform 200 acres on campus into a multi-use district by 2029.  Mankato Free Press

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Blue Earth County will fix the worn pavement on Stoltzman Road between Stadium Road and Pleasant Street with a $1 million project set for 2027—county officials also plan a study in 2026 to look at ways to improve pedestrian safety near West High School. The study will check the busy intersection and driveway access and see if adding a sidewalk is possible despite a steep hill.  Mankato Free Press
