CULTURE NEWS

  • Twin Rivers Council for the Arts’ Writers Series and North Mankato Taylor Library will host acclaimed Minnesota-born author J. Ryan Stradal on Tuesday, October 7 from 5:30—7:30 p.m. at the Spring Lake Park Warming House in North Mankato, where he will discuss his New York Times bestselling debut Kitchens of the Great Midwest as part of the Community Read initiative that followed the distribution of 250 free copies earlier this month.  MankatoLIFE

EDUCATION NEWS

  • MSU's food pantry at Carkoski Commons serves about 500 students a week and must move soon because needed repairs may lead to demolition. A student government task force will meet to choose a new home by summer — options include the Taylor Center and Crossroads Lutheran Church.  Mankato Free Press

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • October 1 marked the start of the Cold Weather Rule—protecting residents from utility shut-offs if they set up a payment plan with power companies through April. Local programs run by the Salvation Army and MVAC offer emergency social services and energy assistance to help residents with disconnect notices.  KEYC
  • Plans for Balcerzak Drive near Minnesota State University aim to reduce driving lanes and add safety features—residents can comment online through Oct. 14 to help shape the study's final recommendations.  Mankato Free Press

SPORTS NEWS

  • Maple River’s Sohre and Ward are leading the Eagles team as they chase a state title, showing they are among the best in the state. The best friends, who once competed against each other, now work together to boost the team’s chances—uniting their efforts for a strong season.  KEYC
  • Mankato local ultra-runner Nick Steel has completed thirteen races over 100 miles this year and logged over 5000 miles. He aims to finish sixteen such races by year's end — hoping to become the youngest to compete in these events as he plans three more races soon.  KEYC
