CULTURE NEWS

  • The first Greater Mankato Ubuntu Festival will occur Oct 9-10 in the Minnesota State University Centennial Student Union Ballroom—featuring family activities, live music, art, and performances by noted reggae artists and community leaders. A Fall Farm Fest is scheduled for Oct 11 at Blue Earth County Community Farm to promote conversation and build lasting community ties.  Mankato Free Press
  • Mankato is set to celebrate its seventh annual Indigenous Peoples Day with free cultural events from Oct 8 to Oct 13—activities include a library book discussion, Indigenous-themed storytime, a public celebration at Mankato East High School, film screenings, and a presentation by Anton Treuer at MSU on Nov 14.  Mankato Free Press

ECONOMY NEWS

  • Economic Development Director Ryan Vesey and Saint Peter council member Keri Johnson traveled to Ireland to boost trade ties and attract new businesses—efforts building on long-standing Minnesota–Ireland connections since the 2009 alliance. They said the trip, funded by taxpayer dollars, will help create jobs and be a key topic at the conference on October 21.  KEYC

EDUCATION NEWS

  • On Thursday, more than 700 students from 22 schools toured 20 local manufacturing centers including South-Central College to learn about jobs in machining, engineering, and welding. Teachers said the tour — which gave a clear look at modern industry opportunities — may help students choose new career paths.  KEYC
  • Bethany Lutheran College is using its Literacy Clinic—led by Education Professor Carrie Pfiefer—to help community members improve reading skills by providing free tutoring for students from kindergarten to 12th grade, and the program aims to boost local literacy rates.  KEYC

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The $18.4 million Highway 60 project in Lake Crystal is nearly finished as crews complete final tasks for a mid-October reopening, weather permitting—residents have faced long detours since April 15. The construction improved road safety with a new continuous-T intersection and barriers for bikers and pedestrians.  Mankato Free Press

SPORTS NEWS

  • The Mankato Loyola volleyball team hosted GHEC/T/ML on Thursday and beat them 3-1, with two Jaguars reaching career milestones during the match.  KEYC
  • Today, the Gusties football team, which includes over a dozen local players, is preparing to face Carleton in their homecoming game + the game builds on strong community and family traditions.  KEYC
  • The Mankato East boys soccer team edged New Prague 1-0 on Oct. 2 by scoring a deciding penalty kick—this win boosted their season standings.  KEYC
