Erdrich, a renowned poet and former Minneapolis poet laureate, will lead a writing workshop at MSU on Thursday, Oct. 16 at 10 a.m. and a craft talk at 3 p.m. — later that day she will join Robert C. Wright Award winner Haven Sory-Steel for a reading at Carnegie Art Center starting at 7:30 p.m. Mankato Free Press
- ➤ North Mankato resident Jaeden Yoshikawa won an Honorable Mention in the 2025 Honey & Wax Book Collecting Prize for her postcard collection 'A Trip Down Lover’s Lane' that features 48 items with authentic real photo postcards from 21 regions and abroad—she received $250 and is now preparing a new collection called 'Portals' focusing on windows and doors. - ➤ MSU hosted a Career and Internship Expo Tuesday at Meyers Field House where over 1,800 students met with 200 employers and seven partner colleges—including Gustavus Adolphus, Bethany Lutheran, South Central, Riverland, Western Governors, North, and Rasmussen—to learn about local work opportunities and boost regional retention after graduation. MSU will hold another expo in spring at a smaller venue to continue enhancing local career connections. Mankato Free Press
ENVIRONMENT NEWS
- ➤ Great River Greening, a St. Paul based environmental group with long roots in Blue Earth and Nicollet counties, will plant more than 30 new trees along the West Mankato Trail from 10 a.m. to noon on October 22 to replace aging trees and ease heat islands & has restored over 50,000 acres statewide as it works to plant 10,000 new trees over the next five years. The group, founded in 1995, works with local partners to improve water quality and reduce flooding as it fights climate change. Mankato Free Press

- ➤ Blue Earth County Household Hazardous Waste Facility at 651 Summit Ave. will remain open during the winter months to expand service for eligible residents of Blue Earth, Le Sueur and Nicollet counties; residents can drop off household waste on Tuesday, Wednesday and Friday between noon and 4 p.m. from November 4 until March — proof of residency is required. Mankato Free Press
- ➤ ISAIAH, a local advocacy group, is hosting the YES to Our Future Summit Saturday from 9:30 to 11:30 a.m. at First Congregational United Church of Christ at 150 Stadium Court to discuss federal cuts that will reduce health care, food assistance and lead to higher property taxes due to the proposed One Big Beautiful Bill, and the summit will share survey findings from over 250 community members while featuring local officials including Sen. Nick Frentz, Rep. Luke Frederick and City Council President Mike Laven with 200 expected attendees. Mankato Free Press

- ➤ On Tuesday morning, VINE Adult Community Center hosted a Nobel Conference watch party so Preston Doyle could watch a livestream on sugar’s health effects—presenters like Harvard professor Frank Hu explained sugar addiction and health guidelines.
