COMMUNITY NEWS
- ➤ MANKATO — Local advocate Denise Crisafi from Minnesota State University's Violence Awareness & Response Program said domestic violence is not limited to married couples and can affect college students, roommates, and family members. MSU events during Domestic Violence Prevention and Awareness Month include an art installation on campus starting Oct. 20 to educate people about the many forms of relationship abuse. EDUCATION NEWS
- ➤ Dan Blaisdell, a fifth-grade teacher at Monroe Elementary in North Mankato, won the Golden Apple Award as parents praised his impact on their children’s lives—he accepted the honor on behalf of fellow teachers. This award shows his strong commitment to guiding students and helping them be true to themselves. KEYC
- ➤ History Fest marks its 30th year at McGowan’s Farm where area students and longtime volunteers learn about old ways of living—public walk-through time will be held tomorrow from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. KEYC
- ➤ MSU student Ryan Starkey was named a finalist for the Navy Federal Credit Union ROTC All-American Scholarship Program for his leadership in the ROTC, where he serves as cadet first sergeant and helps 36 fellow students. He studies criminal justice and law enforcement, won a $2,500 scholarship with another $1,500 to his support fund — his role helped his battalion achieve a top commissioning rate — and he will be honored as one of the top ROTC students in December. - ➤ Range Street’s intersection with Page Avenue in north Mankato is closed as crews work on a sanitary sewer replacement and concrete street repairs—local traffic must follow detour routes until the intersection reopens on Oct 20. Mankato Free Press
HEALTH NEWS
- ➤ Marine veteran Dan Hanson lost many friends during his deployment in Iraq and struggled with his own pain until he got help — now he works at a veteran crisis hotline to help service members who feel alone. He says that staying connected and talking about tough feelings can help prevent self-harm. KEYC
SPORTS NEWS
- ➤ WEM football built a strong first-half lead and maintained its momentum after a late touchdown by St. Clair/Loyola to secure a 32-6 win on homecoming night. KEYC
- ➤ The 16th annual Mankato Marathon will take place October 17 and 18 and is expected to draw over 3,000 runners from local and international areas. Organizers, led by Joy Leafblad, are calling for more volunteers along the same route—volunteers are needed at cheer stations and water stops as they plan for traffic detours. KEYC
- ➤ Minnesota State sports will have a busy weekend as football head coach Todd Hoffner and running back Sam Backer prepare to face Winona State while the nationally ranked volleyball team with Jadyn Lester gets ready to play Wayne State and the men's hockey team, led by coach Luke Strand, opens its season in Omaha—each group aims to build on its strong record. - ➤ Mankato East girls soccer advanced to the championship after beating Mankato West 3-1 on October 9, with Laina Peterson’s early goal giving them a strong lead—key saves by West goalkeeper Averiana Nelson were not enough to change the outcome. KEYC
