COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Volunteers gather today at Spring Lake Park in North Mankato for a cleanup effort coordinated by the Blue Earth Project — the project’s final large group event of the year. The cleanup runs from noon to 2 p.m. and includes a litter study using a smartphone app.  Mankato Free Press

ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • Greater Mankato First Responders staged a simulated car accident at Loyola Catholic School to show the dangers of distracted and impaired driving — the demonstration resulted in a student dying and officials urge parents to set clear driving limits.  KEYC

CULTURE NEWS

  • Mankato’s annual Día de los Muertos festival will be held on October 25 from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. in Old Town—organizers said strong community support helped overcome early fundraising challenges as murals and decorations began to brighten Riverfront Drive.  KEYC

HEALTH NEWS

  • During October, Breast Cancer Awareness month, the Mankato Clinic is urging women to schedule yearly breast cancer screenings—women over 40 or with risk factors should consult their primary doctor for early detection.  KEYC

SPORTS NEWS

  • KEYC published the Sports Extra Fall Week 7 edition on Oct.10, highlighting high school football matchups such as New Ulm vs St. Peter and featuring a women's soccer game between MSU and UMD — the edition offers a clear look at this week's local sports action.  KEYC
  • Over 1300 elementary students attended Friday’s game to cheer on MSU women’s hockey in a program by Mankato Area Public Schools and MSU to spark interest in local sports. The Mavericks lost 2-1 in overtime against St. Thomas.  KEYC
  • Nicollet hosted Adrian-Ellsworth on Oct. 10 and lost 70—38 after the Raiders jumped to a 14—0 lead in the first quarter; the loss marked a challenging night for the Nicollet team.  KEYC
