- ➤ On Saturday morning, over 200 community members gathered at United Congregational Church in Mankato for an ISAIAH event that highlighted hope amid concerns over federal budget cuts, ICE detentions, and reduced support for health care and food programs. Local officials from St. Peter, North Mankato, and Mankato attended while organizers urged the community to act in upcoming elections—warning that inaction may worsen local struggles. CULTURE NEWS
- ➤ Mankato West grad Julia Schumacher finished second in the Miss University of Alabama competition Friday evening at the Bama Theatre in Tuscaloosa. The biology major showcased her community service project, Be the Beat: Battling Heart Disease, and earned titles such as Miss Minnesota’s Teen 2022 and third runner-up at Miss America’s Teen 2022—accolades that also recognized her work with the American Heart Association. - ➤ A Minnesota trooper said a driver with a Class D license may cross into North Dakota for farm work—if the drive stays within 150 air miles of the farm—and he urged motorists to slow down when passing large, heavy farm equipment to reduce crash risks. Mankato Free Press

- ➤ Ask Us Guy asked if the Good Counsel water tower is city-owned since it was built by the School Sisters and underwent water tests that showed safe levels despite a few chemicals above stricter guidelines. Mankato Community Development Director Mark Konz said no plans have been submitted yet for redeveloping the vacant BP station on Highway 169 and the downtown Walgreens — leaving their futures uncertain. - ➤ After a tough overtime loss Friday, the Minnesota State women’s hockey team rebounded with a 3-0 shutout win over St. Thomas in Mankato. Junior Kamryn Van Batavia scored in the second period, Taylor Otremba assisted twice, Whitney Tuttle scored on a power play, and freshman Zoe Lopez sealed the win with an empty net goal—demonstrating a balanced effort. - ➤ The Minnesota State football team beat Winona State 47 to 21 on Oct. 11 — quarterback Mitchell Thompson led scoring drives and running back Sam Backer scored two touchdowns, which moved the team's record to 6 to 1 overall. KEYC
