COMMUNITY NEWS
- ➤ This weekend, Mankato and nearby towns host many events—from a Day of the Dead festival and farmers’ market to a Halloween run, concerts, plays, tours, and haunted rides. Events run from early morning to late evening—offering fun and chances to gather for all ages. Mankato Free Press
CULTURE NEWS
- ➤ White Earth Nation expanded its bison herd in August by adding 45 animals including yearlings, mature cows, and cow—calf pairs. The herd now totals 55 at two prairies where checkups have begun — tribal food sovereignty and cultural traditions guide the program. Mankato Free Press
EDUCATION NEWS
- ➤ Free Halloween planetarium shows will begin Thursday at 6 p.m. and 7:30 p.m. at Mankato East High School at 2600 Hoffman Road — featuring a Black Hole tale that guides viewers through the night sky — with limited seating so reservations are required. Mankato Free Press
- ➤ Mankato Area Public Schools will host open houses Monday at five campuses and on Nov 25 at two campuses—community members can tour bond-funded upgrades including secure entrances, facility expansions, and the new pool and gym at Dakota Meadows Middle School. School officials say further safety, HVAC updates and renovations at Mankato West High School will continue over the next two years. Mankato Free Press
GOVERNMENT NEWS
- ➤ Mankato will start its annual leaf-vacuum service next week with pickups scheduled until Nov. 21, and parts of North Mankato have already begun receiving service as early as Oct. 13—city officials say residents should follow specific placement rules to help the vacuums work efficiently. The city advises placing leaves in rows on the gutter in Mankato and along the boulevard in North Mankato to avoid damage to the vacuums. Mankato Free Press
- ➤ City Fire Marshal Sean Hayes reported that in 2024 there were 13 cooking fires and 5 from discarded smoking materials, and he urged residents to keep three feet clear around burners to prevent fire risks. He also warned that improper use of lithium-ion battery devices may cause fires and advised buying UL-listed products, charging them away from soft surfaces, and recycling old batteries correctly. - ➤ MVAC is processing energy assistance applications during the government shutdown so help is ready when funds arrive—federal funds are expected at least one month after the government re-opens, and residents are urged to contact their energy providers about payment plans and the cold weather rule. HEALTH NEWS
- ➤ St. James blood donor Dale Busch, who began donating in college when his teacher offered extra credit, has made 188 donations and gives blood three times a year to help meet critical needs. The American Red Cross is running a promotion from Monday until Nov. 16 that rewards donors with a $20 gift card and entry to win one of three $5,000 prizes — a thank-you for helping to save lives. - ➤ The Minnesota State volleyball team beat Jamestown 3-0 on Friday night, boosting their home record to 10-1—They will face Northern State today. KEYC
- ➤ Mount Kato is holding a ski and snowboard sale to raise funds for the ski patrol, with gear available tonight until 8 p.m. and again tomorrow from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. KEYC
- ➤ Minnesota State men's hockey gets ready for its home opener against RPI today as coach Luke Strand and junior Evan Murr shared details on Maverick Insider—Mavericks hold a 6-1 record ahead of the match. The segment also noted that the football team will face Wayne State in a road game. KEYC
- ➤ Sam Williams from Mankato East ended his strong season with over 30 wins and a trip to the Class AA state championship match yesterday. He lost 7-6 (2) in the final set against Academy of Holy Angels' Elizabeth Payne, finishing as state runner-up. KEYC
- ➤ The Minnesota State men’s hockey team defeated RPI 4-2 in its home opener Friday night in Mankato, and the win kicked off their season with a strong start. KEYC
