COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Volunteers for the Salvation Army’s annual Red Kettle fundraiser will ring bells in Mankato from November 21 through Christmas Eve, excluding Thanksgiving and Sundays, to help reach a goal of raising $550,000. Mark Murphy will work with local businesses to secure $75,000 while a new Ring for Bling promotion gives bell ringers a chance to win a white gold and diamond necklace valued at $1,000—highlighting the community’s holiday spirit.  Mankato Free Press
  • Greater Mankato United Way is selling a new children’s book called The Kindness Booth, written by Laura Murphy, to inspire acts of kindness and support its annual campaign. The book is available at local bookstores and directly from United Way—every dollar goes to local literacy efforts.  KEYC

CULTURE NEWS

  • North Mankato librarian Nate Pedersen was nominated for the World Fantasy Award for Best Anthology for editing his horror and dark fantasy work The Dagon Collection—presented in a 1920s-style auction format inspired by H.P. Lovecraft. Although he did not win, his nomination opened new opportunities and led to further anthology contracts.  Mankato Free Press
  • Blue Earth County Historical Society is hosting open houses to mark its 124th anniversary at the History Center (424 Warren St) with free admission for museum exhibits and refreshments served. The events are scheduled for Friday (9 a.m. to 5 p.m.) and Saturday (10 a.m. to 4 p.m.) with the museum gift shop open.  Mankato Free Press

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Mankato Area Public School Board saved about $5 million on a $37.5 million HVAC bond sale for four elementary schools after receiving 12 bids that lowered the interest rate — the board approved the sale to fund the project starting this winter, which will also help reduce the 2026 levy.  Mankato Free Press
  • Voters in Nicollet Public Schools approved two referendum measures, providing a $288,000 operating budget increase for five years and a $7.6 million bond for security and infrastructure improvements+the bond will finance upgrades such as new secured entrances, exterior doors, tuck pointing on the brick facade, new flooring, HVAC fixes, and an expanded technical education area with plans to hire an additional teacher and add more college courses.  KEYC
  • The Mankato Area Public School District is hosting focus school sessions at Rosa Parks (a STEAM focus school), Bridges, and Jefferson elementary to explain program highlights and enrollment for the 2025–2026 school year. The sessions begin today at Rosa Parks at 4:30 p.m. with additional meetings on Nov. 13, Nov. 20, and Nov. 24.  Mankato Free Press

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • MnDOT will start a six‐month study next week as it turns off the intersection lighting at Highway 68 and Blue Earth County Road 45 near Courtland—officials will track crash data to decide if the aging system, installed in 1991, should be removed.  Mankato Free Press

SPORTS NEWS

  • Senior Keira Friedrich of St. Peter’s won the Class AA Cross Country State Title in 18 minutes, 3 seconds—helping the Saints finish fourth—before she heads to the University of Minnesota next fall.  KEYC
  • Bethany Lutheran College men’s soccer team scored three unanswered goals against University of Northwestern on Wednesday to secure a 3-0 win. The Vikings will face University of Wisconsin-Superior in the UMAC championship on Saturday (November 8th) as they try to win the title.  KEYC
