COMMUNITY NEWS

  • The Holiday Sharing Tree campaign—now in its 40th season—starts at 11 a.m. today at the River Hills Mall food court and has given over 84,000 gifts since 1985 to residents in Blue Earth and Nicollet counties. Donors can pick up and return giving cards at local sites like Fleet Farm, Bomgaars and Hy-Vee by 5 p.m. Dec. 14.  Mankato Free Press
  • Parie Nikka Albadar-Buffington, a native of Guyana living in Eagle Lake, won one of 12 awards in Mankato’s annual photo contest when her February calendar photo and grand prize were announced at a Monday night City Council meeting. Her work, which also appeared in June, August and October’s calendars, earned her a $100 gift certificate for a civic center event — a prize that shows local photographers’ talent.  Mankato Free Press
  • North Mankato’s 95-year-old Dick Giroux was the last member of the Korean War veterans club and was honored Tuesday at a Veterans Day event with a pin—an event organized by Ann Marso. He enlisted in 1948 and attended reunions since 1955—marking decades of service and lasting friendship.  Mankato Free Press

CULTURE NEWS

  • Anton Treuer, a professor of Ojibwe and author, will be the keynote speaker at American Indian Night on Friday from 5—7 p.m. at MSU’s Centennial Student Union Ballroom—this event will include a NASA student exhibit, dinner, a question and answer session, and a book signing.  Mankato Free Press

HEALTH NEWS

  • The Mankato Clinic Foundation announced $87,500 in Q4 grants to support local health and wellness programs including seniors meals, youth programming, and mental health staffing—Mankato Clinic physicians have donated over $2 million in grants over the last 10 years, and applications are open until December 1.  KEYC
  • The U.S. Department of Veteran Affairs reported that 11% of veterans had high levels of depression and nearly 10% experienced high anxiety (which can raise the risk of suicide). Dr. Chris Chiros said help like therapy, medication, or peer support groups can support veterans (if you or someone you know needs help, call 9-8-8).  KEYC
