COMMUNITY NEWS

  • The Mankato Family YMCA will host a 5K at Sibley Park this Saturday where participants can also get a first look at Kiwanis Holiday Lights. The race begins at 4:45 p.m.—other events start at 3:30 p.m.  KEYC
  • South Central College is preparing for its 2nd annual Grateful Gathering by having culinary students build gingerbread houses and prepare full-course Thanksgiving meals for sale at the North Mankato campus next Tuesday — the event will help families celebrate Thanksgiving.  KEYC

ECONOMY NEWS

  • Farmers across the Upper Midwest harvested record yields of corn, wheat and soybeans this year but remain worried about lower crop prices and incomes, according to a Federal Reserve Bank survey—80% of lenders noted a decline since last year. The report showed rising loan demand and more bankruptcies—factors that may lead farmers to rely more on government support.  Mankato Free Press

EDUCATION NEWS

  • More than 700 high school students visited a trades expo today in Mankato to learn about work paths that do not require a four-year college. Organized by Construct Tomorrow—the group behind the event—the expo aimed to show students that trades offer paid learning and long-term job opportunities amid a worker shortage.  KEYC

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Today, lane closures are in effect near the intersection of Sibley Parkway and CHS Pergola Way after 6 a.m.—crews remove a few trees and use flagging operations as they prepare for the Kern Bridge project with work expected to finish by day’s end.  Mankato Free Press
  • The Minnesota Department of Employment and Economic Development awarded more than $4.8 million through its Youth at Work Opportunity Grants Program to 39 organizations that will help over 4,000 young people gain job skills—Faribault Public Schools received $190,000 and Mankato groups got $500,000.  KEYC

SPORTS NEWS

  • Mankato West girls hockey hosted Northfield on Tuesday and lost 10-2 as the Raiders quickly built a lead and maintained control throughout the game.  KEYC
  • The Minnesota State volleyball team battled Sioux Falls in Tuesday’s NSIC tournament and fell 3—2 in a close match. The loss ended their run in the opening round as they regroup for future games.  KEYC
