COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Mankato photographer Josh Madson of Madson Media will hold free Christmas portraits at Snell Motors on Nov 29 from 9 a.m. to noon — with a vintage red truck, a 20-foot Christmas tree and red curtains from the Minnesota State University theater department as festive backdrops. Families will receive two digital images and may purchase more photos to benefit a local food shelf and area arts organizations.  Mankato Free Press
  • A Fresh Start in Mankato opened its expanded 3,000-square-foot location at 1420 North Riverfront Drive, Suite 102, to help more than 20 households a month by providing full household items at no cost. The nonprofit will also host its second annual Holiday Decor and Gift Sale on Friday at Messiah Lutheran Church—aiming to raise funds and keep unused decorations out of landfills.  Mankato Free Press

EDUCATION NEWS

  • A local youth work program was awarded $500,000 from DEED to provide job training for at-risk youths aged 14–24, aiming to connect them with good-paying jobs in high-growth industries — the grant is managed by South Central Workforce Council/Minnesota Valley Action Council and Southwest Private Industry Council. This funding is part of DEED’s Youth at Work Opportunity Grants Program that serves economically disadvantaged youths.  Mankato Free Press

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Crews are removing trees in Sibley Park to clear space for the new Kern Bridge. The $10.5 million project—funded mostly by state and federal dollars with a local share—will create a pedestrian connection from Sibley Park to Land of Memories Park and is set to finish by fall.  KEYC
  • The Minnesota Department of Agriculture advised farmers who sold grain to Hansen-Mueller Co.—which filed for Chapter 11 on November 17—to file claims for unpaid sales; claims must include supporting documents and may be reduced based on contract age, while farmers with warehouse receipts should also contact the USDA. This measure aims to secure payments for producers affected by the recent bankruptcy.  KEYC

HEALTH NEWS

  • MDH will hold a public hearing on December 2 from 6 to 7:30 p.m. to discuss changes at Allina Health Faribault Medical Center. The birth center will close December 1—labor and delivery will move to Owatonna Hospital, emergency surgical coverage will end on evenings and weekends, and pediatric admissions will stop on May 7.  KEYC
  • Drivers in Mankato are urged to prepare for winter by keeping gas tanks at least half full + charging phones and stocking safety kits with warm gear, a small shovel, and emergency supplies to reduce the risk if roads become slick. The advice aims to help drivers handle winter conditions safely.  KEYC
