COMMUNITY NEWS

  • South Central College hosted its annual 'Grateful Giving' event Tuesday, November 25th — serving over 400 Thanksgiving meals and featuring a gingerbread house silent auction organized by its culinary and architecture departments.  KEYC
  • The Salvation Army in Mankato needs more bell ringers for Black Friday and the busy weekend ahead—volunteer hours remain far short. Captain Andy Wheeler said seasonal paid positions are also available and interested helpers should contact the group directly.  KEYC

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Alec Maertens boarded his flight from Florida to visit family for Thanksgiving after packing winter gear as a dusting of snow shows that winter is here in Mankato—meteorologist Jacob Beitlich said temperatures will drop to the teens on Sunday with more snow expected Friday and Saturday.  Mankato Free Press

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Saint Peter city council voted 4 to 3 to reject a 64-unit affordable housing project near River’s Edge Hospital because members felt the location was unsuitable. City Administrator Todd Prafke said the council remains supportive and will search for a better site to address regional housing needs—highlighting the ongoing shortage.  KEYC

HEALTH NEWS

  • Counseling Services of Southern Minnesota added a substance use program for teens and adults last year as local treatment options closed (about 20 people are enrolled). Nurse Andy Kitzberger, who sought help after his stepdad’s suicide in March, said the personalized care helped him manage his drinking.  Mankato Free Press

SPORTS NEWS

  • Mount Kato got its first snowfall Tuesday evening and the ski patrol said cold weather may allow an early opening for skiers and snowboarders. The crew will start making snow with cannons later this week—provided the ground freezes enough and temperatures drop further.  KEYC
